Nature & scenery

A private photography loop through Vietnam's northern highlands: Hanoi - Tu Le - Mu Cang Chai - Sapa - Bac Ha - Hoang Su Phi (Ha Giang) - Hanoi. Sunrise at Mam Xoi Hill, the Muong Hoa terraces, and the empty, little-visited valleys of Hoang Su Phi - the finest terrace scenery in the north with almost no crowds.

Itinerary - 6 Days 5 Nights

Day 1 · L, D

Hanoi → Tu Le Valley → Mu Cang Chai

Drive northwest through mountain passes and the Tu Le Valley to Mu Cang Chai, terraced paddies spilling down the slopes. Overnight Mu Cang Chai.

Day 2 · B, L

Mam Xoi Hill Sunrise → Sapa

Pre-dawn to Mam Xoi Hill - the most photographed hillside in Mu Cang Chai - for sunrise over the terraces, then drive to Sapa. Overnight Sapa.

Day 3 · B, L

Sapa → Muong Hoa Valley → Topas Ecolodge

Morning on foot through the Muong Hoa terraces (Black Hmong & Red Dao fields, ~900-1,400m). Overnight near Sapa / Topas Ecolodge.

Day 4 · B, L, D

Sapa → Bac Ha → Hoang Su Phi

East toward Hoang Su Phi, a remote highland district of the Ha Giang region near the Chinese border - broad, open terraces farmed by La Chi, Dao, Nung, and Hmong communities. Overnight Hoang Su Phi.

Day 5 · B, L, D

Hoang Su Phi

Sunrise over Nam Hong sets the terraces ablaze; trekking between hamlets at an unhurried pace through one of the least-visited terrace landscapes in Vietnam. Overnight Ha Giang region.

Day 6 · B, L

Hoang Su Phi → Hanoi

A final sunrise - low warm light raking across the terraces, mist lifting from the valleys - then the long drive back to Hanoi.

Good questions about this tour

Is this tour mainly for photographers? Will I enjoy it if I'm not into photography?

Yes - it's built around photography, with early sunrise starts at Mam Xoi Hill, the Muong Hoa terraces and the empty valleys of Hoang Su Phi. If you love landscapes and don't mind pre-dawn wake-ups it's superb; if you want a more relaxed mix of culture and downtime, a shorter Sapa route suits you better.

Hoang Su Phi looks remote - is the driving long and tiring?

It's a long overland loop through the northwest, so expect several hours of mountain driving on some days - that remoteness is exactly why Hoang Su Phi has so few tourists. The driver stops at the best viewpoints, so the drive becomes part of the experience rather than dead time.
